When joining the Orléans-Tours academy, the first difficulty is not pedagogical: it is understanding which digital door to go through. PIA and Arena coexist, each with its role, and the confusion between the two generates a good portion of assistance requests at the beginning of the school year.
PIA and Arena in Orléans-Tours: two distinct portals, two different functions
Unlike some academies like Grenoble, which has initiated a partial merger of its portals, the Orléans-Tours academy maintains a strict separation between PIA and Arena. Understanding this distinction helps avoid going around in circles.
PIA, for Portail Interactif Agents, serves as an entry point to the academic intranet. It contains rectorate news, career information, institutional documentation, and especially the section “My applications, my tools.” It is a navigation hub.
Arena, on the other hand, provides access to business applications: student management, training registrations, and school management tools. In practice, one often goes through PIA to reach Arena, which creates the impression of a single tool when in fact there are two distinct layers.
This architecture has a concrete consequence: tutorials found on other academies do not always apply. A guide written for Grenoble or Versailles may describe direct access to Arena, whereas Orléans-Tours requires prior passage through PIA. To access PIA Orléans-Tours and Arena without error, it is better to rely on the procedures specific to this academy.

Connecting to the PIA Orléans-Tours portal: credentials and authentication
Have you noticed that the login page offers two different visual options? One concerns the classic password, the other the OTP key. Here’s how to distinguish them.
Login with username and password
The majority of staff log in with their academic email username and password. The username typically takes the form of firstname.lastname, the same as that used for webmail.
The initial password corresponds to the NUMEN for many agents, unless changed later. If you have never changed it and the login fails, that is the first thing to check.
Login with OTP key
School directors and some management staff have an OTP (One-Time Password) key. This physical key generates a six-digit code that changes every few seconds.
On the login screen, you need to click on “I authenticate with my academic OTP.” You then enter your username and a passcode made up of two elements combined:
- A personal four-digit PIN, set during the key activation
- The six-digit code displayed on the key at the time of login
- These two elements are entered without spaces in the “passcode” field
In case of a blockage, never share your credentials via email. The DSI (Information Systems Department) never asks for this information. Any solicitation of this type is phishing.
Transition from PIA to Arena: navigating to business applications
This is the point that confuses the most people. Arena does not have a standalone public access URL for this academy. PIA serves as a mandatory gateway to Arena’s business applications.
Let’s take a concrete example. A teacher needs to register for a training session via Sofia FMO. The procedure follows three steps:
- Login to PIA Orléans-Tours with their credentials
- Navigate to the “My applications, my tools” section to access the Arena portal
- Select Sofia FMO from the list of available Arena applications according to their profile
This PIA, then Arena, then final application pathway applies to most business tools. The applications visible in Arena depend on the user’s profile: an assistant, a director, and an administrative staff member do not see the same entries.

Blocked account and access issues to the academic portal
A connection refusal does not always mean a wrong password. The Orléans-Tours academy applies an automatic account blocking in case of detecting a security issue. Repeated attempts, logging in from an unusual network, or suspicion of compromise can trigger this lockout.
The unlocking procedure goes through the “Blocked access” application, accessible from the PIA login page without authentication. It guides the user step by step to reactivate their account.
Special case: using a VPN
If you are using a personal or professional VPN, the connection may be refused or disrupted. Several services of the National Education, including Magistère, explicitly state that VPN devices cause blocks. Disabling the VPN before connecting resolves most of these situations.
Technical assistance based on your affiliation
The assistance channel depends on your establishment. Schools and decentralized services go through the Passion tool on the academic extranet. Secondary education institutions send their requests via email to academic support. Confusing the two channels slows down ticket processing.
The usage charter of the information system, accepted at the first login, reminds that each agent is responsible for the security of their access. A shared account among colleagues, even for convenience, constitutes a violation of this charter and complicates any subsequent unlocking procedure.
The two-portal architecture specific to Orléans-Tours may seem redundant at first glance. In reality, it ensures a clear separation between the information space (PIA) and the action space (Arena), which simplifies the management of access rights by profile and limits security risks associated with a single attack surface.
