The project mobilized around 500 million euros and nearly five years of construction. At the opening in late 2022, about forty brands were announced. The ambition expressed by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield aimed to transform this historic Montparnasse shopping center into a full-fledged shopping and food destination.
By 2024, several shops had closed, some after less than a year and a half of operation. Vacant spaces have settled in for the long term, and the trend intensified in 2025. Closure of Food Society: dining in Montparnasse in question
The most visible blow to the center’s attractiveness remains the closure of Food Society on January 1, 2026. This vast food court, presented as one of the driving forces of the project at its inauguration, ceased operations after a judicial recovery procedure.
The on-site dining options have been significantly reduced. Feedback varies by day and time, but a significant portion of the space dedicated to restaurants remains unoccupied. The “food destination” positioning that was supposed to distinguish Les Ateliers Gaîté from traditional shopping centers is no longer relevant.
For dining in the Montparnasse area, it’s now better to rely on the brasseries and restaurants on Rue de la Gaîté or Boulevard du Montparnasse rather than the center itself.
Fashion shops and brands still present at the Maine Montparnasse center
Among the brands that continue to operate, there are accessible fashion labels like Undiz, positioned in the lingerie and loungewear segment at low prices. The center also hosts a few service and accessory shops, but the shopping offering remains below what was originally planned.

- Fashion and accessory brands (Undiz and a few other mid-range brands), spread across the levels of the center
- Leisure spaces like Smile World, a flight simulator located at Gaîté Montparnasse, targeting families and thrill-seekers
- A few fast food outlets that survived from the opening period, whose longevity remains uncertain
We are far from the offering of a major Parisian shopping center. For diverse fashion shopping in the area, options remain limited within the center.
Access and transport: how to reach the Montparnasse shopping center
One of the real advantages of the location is its accessibility. The Gaîté metro station (line 13) directly serves the center. Montparnasse station, just a few minutes’ walk away, connects the site to metro lines 4, 6, 12, and 13, as well as TGVs to the west and southwest of France.
In practice, there are three options to get there:
- Metro line 13, stop Gaîté: exit just a few meters from the main entrance of the center, on the Rue de la Gaîté side
- Montparnasse station (lines 4, 6, 12, 13, and TGV): expect about a five-minute walk via underground access or Rue de l’Arrivée
- Buses and self-service bikes: several Vélib’ stations are located around the center, and there are many bus lines serving Montparnasse

Opening hours and expected closing days
The shops at Les Ateliers Gaîté follow standard Parisian shopping center hours, generally from 10 AM to 8 PM from Monday to Saturday. Sunday openings depend on the brands and periods. Certain holidays like August 15 may alter the hours: it’s wise to check before heading out, especially for independent shops that set their own hours.
Leisure spaces like Smile World may have extended hours in the evening or on weekends.
Should we still count on the Maine Montparnasse shopping center for shopping in Paris
The Maine Montparnasse shopping center is going through a difficult period. Commercial vacancy and the closure of Food Society have diminished the interest in a dedicated visit. If you are passing through the station, a quick stop may be worth it for the shops still open or for Smile World. For more comprehensive shopping in the area, Rue de Rennes and Boulevard Raspail have a higher concentration of active brands.
